The TOEFL® Primary™ tests are assessments from ETS that help you shape young students' English-language instruction in a way you never have before. Based on the rich heritage of the TOEFL® test and best practices in English-language testing, the TOEFL Primary tests are designed for students ages 8+ and measure the English communication skills that provide a foundation for students' future success.

You can use the TOEFL Primary tests to guide your teaching goals, monitor student progress, identify students' strengths, weaknesses and more.

Scores are mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and TOEFL Primary Reading scores are matched to MetaMetrics® Lexile® measures.

How an you can use the TOEFL Primary Test

To better meet the expectations of English-language programs worldwide, the TOEFL Junior tests are available in two testing modes and measure a range of skills:

TOEFL Junior Standard test — a paper-delivered test that measures Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, and Language Form and Meaning. The TOEFL Junior Standard test is currently available in over 50 countries around the world.

TOEFL Junior Comprehensive test — a computer-delivered test that measures Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, Speaking and Writing. The TOEFL Junior Comprehensive test is being introduced in phases in various locations around the world.

The Reading and Listening test — Step 1 is intended for students in the earlier stages of English learning and covers:

  • - Familiar contexts (school, home, playground)
  • - Basic formulaic expressions
  • - Basic vocabulary and phrases related to common objects and people
  • - Short and simple requests and directions
  • - Short and simple text relevant to everyday experiences


The Reading and Listening test — Step 2 is intended for students who have acquired some communicative English skills and covers:

  • - Basic expressions, requests, phrases and directions
  • - Simple short stories and conversations on topics beyond everyday experiences
  • - Unfamiliar words given sufficient amount of contextual clues
  • - Simple content-based texts


The Speaking test is intended for Reading and Listening test takers — Step 1 or Step 2 — and covers:

  • - Giving simple descriptions
  • - Expressing basic emotions, feelings and opinions
  • - Making simple requests
  • - Asking questions
  • - Giving directions
  • - Explaining and sequencing simple events
